What Is a High-Viscosity Internal Gear Pump?

A high-viscosity internal gear pump is a positive displacement pump designed for transferring high-viscosity fluids such as lubricating oils, resins, coatings, adhesives, chemical additives, and polymers. Its internal gear and external gear create sealed cavities that provide continuous, controlled fluid transfer.

With strong suction performance and stable low-speed operation, it is suitable for high-viscosity fluids and widely used for fluid transfer, metering, circulation, and blending. Optional heating jackets, electric heating, wetted materials, and mechanical seals can be configured for different operating conditions.

Primarily using an internal gear design, with modified external gear options for special applications. The sealed pumping cavities enable stable transfer of resins, coatings, lubricants, and other high-viscosity fluids.

Strong Suction Performance with Temperature Control

Good suction capability supports stable handling of high-consistency fluids. Temperature control helps prevent excessive viscosity increase and maintains continuous, stable pumping.

Precision Gearing for Stable, Durable Operation

High-precision gear design supports different viscosity conditions, providing stable flow, low operating noise, and reliable pump performance for extended service life.

Optional Heating Jacket for Temperature Control

The pump body and seal chamber can be equipped with an integrated heating jacket for steam or thermal oil heating, or cooling fluid circulation, helping prevent high-viscosity fluids from solidifying or becoming excessively viscous.

International Design Standards, Reliable Sealing

Designed in accordance with widely used international standards, with sealing systems supporting API 682 seal flushing practices for industrial projects and automated process lines.

Optimized Design, Easy Maintenance

The pump design considers on-site maintenance requirements, with a simple structure and convenient servicing to help reduce downtime and support continuous production.

High-Viscosity Internal Gear Pump

Internal Gear Pump (For High-Viscosity Applications)

An internal gear pump is a positive displacement pump that uses an internal gear and a smaller external gear. As the gears rotate, they form sealed cavities that continuously draw in and discharge fluid, making the pump well suited for high-viscosity fluids such as resins, adhesives, additives, asphalt, heavy oil, and coatings.

As the gears separate on the suction side, the expanding cavity creates a pressure differential that draws fluid into the pump. The large suction area supports reliable feeding of high-viscosity fluids, while the internal gear design provides smooth flow, low pulsation, and stable low-speed operation, helping reduce shear and heat generation.

Internal gear pumps are widely used for fluid transfer, metering, circulation, and blending in the lubricants, chemical, coatings, and other process industries. Pump configurations can be selected based on fluid viscosity, temperature, pressure, flow rate, and material compatibility.

External Gear Pump

External Gear Pump (For Low- to Medium-Viscosity Applications)

An external gear pump is a positive displacement pump that uses two externally meshing gears. As the gears rotate, the changing volume between the gear teeth and pump casing draws in and discharges fluid. With a simple structure and easy maintenance, external gear pumps are widely used for hydraulic oil, lubricating oils, and other low- to medium-viscosity fluids.

External gear pumps offer reliable fluid transfer, simple maintenance, and relatively low cost. However, their suction performance and efficiency can decrease with very high-viscosity fluids, especially at higher speeds. For high-viscosity materials such as resins, additives, asphalt, and thick coatings, internal gear pumps are generally more suitable.

Pump selection depends on fluid viscosity, suction conditions, pressure, temperature, and required flow rate. Specially designed external gear pumps can also be configured for specific high-viscosity applications.

Electric Heating Pump

BJVP Internal and External Gear Pumps

BJVP provides positive displacement gear pumps, including internal gear pumps and external gear pumps, for fluid transfer across a wide range of viscosities and operating conditions. They are suitable for lubricating oils, additives, asphalt, solvents, polymers, coatings, and other industrial fluids.

BJVP U-Series gear pumps are available in standard, jacketed, and electrically heated configurations. Jacketed models use steam or thermal oil for heating and temperature maintenance, while electrically heated models provide an independent heating option for additives, asphalt, waxes, and other temperature-sensitive fluids.

Depending on fluid properties and process requirements, pumps can be configured with ductile iron, carbon steel, 304/304L or 316/316L stainless steel, and other alloys. Sealing options include mechanical seals, cartridge seals, double mechanical seals, triple-lip seals, and packing seals.

With reliable suction performance and stable flow, BJVP gear pumps are widely used in petroleum, chemicals, lubricants, coatings, food, and general industrial applications.

High-Viscosity Gear Pump FAQs

Common questions about high-viscosity gear pump selection, applications, and fluid transfer

What fluids are internal gear pumps suitable for?

Internal gear pumps offer good suction performance and stable fluid transfer for lubricating oils, resins, coatings, asphalt, heavy oil, polymers, chemical additives, and other medium- to high-viscosity fluids. Depending on the pump design and operating conditions, they can also handle certain lower-viscosity liquids.

Is a high-viscosity gear pump always an internal gear pump?

Not necessarily. High-viscosity gear pump refers to a pump selected for a high-viscosity application, while internal gear pump refers to a specific gear meshing configuration. Internal gear pumps are commonly used for high-viscosity service, while specially designed external gear pumps may also be suitable for certain applications.

How do you select an internal gear pump?

Pump selection should consider fluid viscosity, flow rate, pressure, temperature, corrosiveness, solids content, transfer distance, and pipe diameter. For high-viscosity service, an internal gear pump is often considered first, followed by selection of the appropriate pump model, materials, sealing system, and heating or cooling configuration.

Does a high-viscosity fluid require a heated gear pump?

For fluids such as asphalt, waxes, and certain high-viscosity additives that may solidify or increase significantly in viscosity as temperature falls, a jacketed or electrically heated gear pump can be used. Steam, thermal oil, or electric heating can help maintain a suitable pumping temperature.
