What Is a Manifold System?

A manifold system is a centralized fluid distribution and transfer system that uses a network of pipelines and automatic valves to route different materials between multiple tanks, blending units, filling lines, and other process terminals. By replacing numerous dedicated transfer lines with a flexible matrix-style piping arrangement, an automatic manifold system simplifies plant piping, reduces space requirements, and enables efficient one-to-many, many-to-one, and many-to-many material transfer.

How Does a Manifold System Work?

An automatic manifold system controls multiple process valves to establish the required material flow path. According to the production process, the system automatically connects the selected inlet and outlet lines while isolating other flow paths.

How Does a Manifold System Reduce Pipeline Requirements?

A matrix-style manifold system consolidates multiple material transfer routes into a centralized piping and valve network. Instead of installing a dedicated line for every transfer route, different flow paths can be established through automatic valve switching.

This approach can significantly reduce the number of dedicated pipelines, simplify plant layout, and reduce the space occupied by transfer piping. Pigging Manifold System

Pigging Manifold System

An advanced manifold system can be designed with automated pipeline purging or an integrated pigging system to further reduce residual material after product transfer.

After material transfer is completed, the selected pipeline can be isolated and purged using compressed air or another suitable medium. Residual material can be returned to the source tank or transferred to a designated receiving point, depending on the process configuration.

For applications requiring higher product recovery and contamination control, the manifold can be integrated with pig launching and receiving stations. A cleaning pig travels through the shared pipeline and pushes residual material toward the designated recovery point.

This combination of automatic manifold routing and pigging technology helps reduce product residue, product loss, and cross-contamination while allowing multiple tanks or process units to share common transfer pipelines.

What Are the Main Functions of a Manifold System?

Can Multiple Tanks Share One Pipeline?
